Tantra is oftentimes considered to be the “black sheep” of the yogic disciplines. People who know of it only casually often associate its practices with the most basic carnal impulses – and, typically, with “loose moral” connotations. This is a shame, because one of the chief aims of many Tantric practices is to refine the root sexual energy – usually, with the influence and commingling of the heart’s energy – with the goal of making the practitioner more energetically balanced and less at the mercy of the sex drive. That root drive, which is the most basic and primary energy that human beings possess, can be refined in such a way that it brings more warmth and vitality into our partnerships, in and out of lovemaking.

Various Tantric exercises achieve this goal through the combination of breathing, muscular manipulation, and visualization. Although Tantra is often referred to as “partnership yoga”, many of these exercises are ones that you can do on your own. Conscious breathing is the primary means through which energy is moved throughout both the physical and the psychic body. Breathing can be used to arouse or calm yourself, depending on your goal. But conscious breathing, in every Tantric exercise and meditation, is always used in conjunction with the two other elements of the practice: muscular manipulation and visualization.

The muscle that is most often used in these practices is called the PC muscle, for short. It lies between the buttocks and the genitals. If you’re urinating and then quickly squeeze to stop the flow, you’re using the PC muscle. This muscle is so important because it lies in the region of the body that Tantric yogis identify as the location of the root chakra. This is where raw, primal energy lives, and it can be refined as it is moved upwards through higher chakras. Many Tantric techniques involve squeezing the PC muscle with every inhalation and relaxing it with every exhalation, to get that basic, root energy moving.

The chakras are highly important with regards to the third key element of most practices, visualization. While breathing and manipulating the PC muscle moves the energy, practitioners then visualize it passing through the various chakras. Yogis identify at least seven, and sometimes as many as ten, of these energy centers in the psychic body. Moving energy through the chakras is the essential way to bring it into more refined states. One sought-for result of all the practices that employ this technique is the movement of basic sexual energy into the heart center.

The advantages of achieving this are manifold. Practitioners report feeling enhanced awareness, energy, and vitality. The sexual impulse is no longer experienced as indiscriminate and forceful. It becomes tempered with the caring, empathy, and openness that are the hallmarks of the heart chakra. This is an oft-overlooked goal of many Tantric practices, which enables yogis to feel more heat in their hearts and more tenderness in their loins with their intimate partners – a wonderful commingling of sexuality and heart energy.

It’s maddening to lie awake at night tossing and turning until the wee morning hours. The harder you focus on getting to sleep, the more sleep eludes you. In frustration, some people turn to prescription drugs for insomnia. But these medications have serious side-effects, and they make you sleepy the next day. Is there a better way? Recently there’s been some interest in using acupuncture to fight insomnia. Does acupuncture for insomnia really work?

Acupuncture for Insomnia: Does It Work?

Acupuncture has been used to treat other medical conditions with some success, but it isn’t commonly used to treat insomnia – at least not in this country. But a recent study published in Medical Acupuncture Online Journal put acupuncture to the test. Researchers gave 40 insomnia patients either true acupuncture or sham acupuncture.

The results? All of the patients in the true acupuncture group experienced improved sleep quality, which lasted throughout the 18 month follow-up period.

Acupuncture to Fight Insomnia: More Research is Needed

Other small studies, including a few randomized-controlled trials, show that acupuncture for insomnia treatment has some benefit, but most of these studies were small and poorly designed. Some of these studies suggested that acupuncture improves overall sleep quality, but results have been inconsistent as to whether it decreases the time it takes to fall asleep and whether it allows insomniacs to stay asleep longer.

There’s a real need for larger randomized-controlled trials to look more closely at acupuncture for insomnia. Acupuncture is more commonly used to fight insomnia in China than it is in the United States, which means there’s been little research in this country to look at its effectiveness.

Acupuncture vs. Prescription Drugs for Insomnia

Acupuncture holds some promise for treating insomnia, but there’s not enough evidence for most doctors to recommend using it to treat sleep problems. On the other hand, it may be worth trying before resorting to prescription drugs for insomnia. Many prescription drugs for insomnia are addictive and cause drowsiness or dizziness the next day, which increases the risk of car accidents and falls. Acupuncture for insomnia is well-tolerated with few risks.

Acupuncture to Fight Insomnia: The Bottom Line?

Since there are no large randomized-controlled studies demonstrating the effectiveness of acupuncture for insomnia, it shouldn’t be the first treatment you try. Make appropriate lifestyle changes first but before turning to prescription drugs, discuss the possibility of trying acupuncture with your doctor instead. It’s a safer treatment that most of the available medications and it may offer some benefits.

Ayurveda is a form of traditional medicine which is common in South Asia and practiced as a complement and an alternative to modern medicine in other parts of the world. Several of the natural and holistic healing systems known in the West, such as homeopathy, are thought to have their roots in Ayurveda. Below is a brief introduction to the origins and basic principles of Ayurvedic medicine.

Origins of Ayurveda

In Sanskrit, the primary language of Buddhism and Hinduism, the word Ayurveda translates roughly to “the science of life”, or “the science of longevity”. It is one of the oldest organized systems of medicine, and is thought to have originated in India more than five thousand years ago. It was originally passed on through the ages from masters to disciples through oral teachings. Although part of ayurvedic knowledge was committed to writing by experts including the surgeon Shushruta in a work called “Shushruta Samhita” sometime in the first millennium BC, a large part of the teachings remain a mystery and are widely inaccessible to this day.

Basic principles: Prevention and Balance

Ayurvedic traditions place great emphases on the importance of maintaining personal balance to avoid illness. Each person should be able to achieve a balance according to their own individual constitution, and should learn how to adapt their lifestyle, mindset and diet to create and preserve it. Any change from the balanced state would result in illness, whether the imbalance is triggered by internal factors such as stress or trauma, or external factors such as diet, habits, weather, seasons, work or personal relationships.

Individual constitution

According to Vasant Lad’s “Ayurveda, A Brief Introduction and Guide”, each individual is thought to be conceived with a unique mix of physical, mental and emotional features that constitute their individual constitution or energy pattern. Therefore, before going any further, it’s important to remember that the objective is for each person to find and maintain their own personal balance rather than to aim for any one ideal situation that fits everyone.

Three Doshas

Three subtle energies or “Doshas” are important to consider in order to achieve the balance described above and are referred to by their Sanskrit names: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.

“Vata”, which translates loosely to “wind” and is related to the concepts of air and space, is the energy of movement. “Pitta”, which translates loosely to “bile” and is related to elements of fire and water, is the energy of metabolism (or digestion). Finally, “Kapha”, which translates loosely to “phlegm” and is related to the elements of water and earth, is the energy of structure and lubrication. Every person has different levels of all three energies working together, but one of the three is usually more prominent and is known as their dominant Dosha.

Each Dosha requires specific dietary considerations and lifestyle habits to remain in balance. Inversely, imbalances of a particular Dosha can be recognized through specific changes in health and mood. Disease is thought to occur due to a Dosha imbalance or due to toxins in the body.

Your memory is one of your most important assets in life, the state of your memory depends on the state of your mind. When we are too stressed or tired the mind will suffer from memory loss and problems. For your memory to work at its best your mind and body should be in a relaxed state.

These days there are a lot of medications available that are supposed to enhance your memory. The Unexplainable Store currently offer a lot different kinds of software and directly downloadable mp3′s to help increase your minds concentration and capacity. If we want our memory to be enhanced, then first we need to learn how to concentrate.

As stated before here are a lot of medications available to help you achieve these results too. However there are a lot of disadvantages with this. The first being that, they are only temporary at best. The second is that, there can be many side effects associated with these medications. Therefore it is suggested to avoid these kinds of temporary medications and instead use something which is a permanent solution that directly works on the brain.

The memory enhancing software mentioned before achieves these permanent results. To do this a broad range of frequency waves are used and which are heard via headphones or your stereo. This frequencies are then received by the brain, which in turn causes the brain to fall into a subconscious state of mind.
This subconscious state is very important, as the brain is at its peak potential during this stage.

This subconscious state helps the brain to work more efficiently and for longer periods of time. Your concentration power will increase, and the brains capacity to remember will increase. These techniques are extremely useful as they result in very a relaxing feeling which facilitates the brain to remove all unnecessary elements that were stopping the memory potential reaching its peak capacity.

There have been scientific studies undertaken to prove that these memory enhancing techniques are quite helpful in some patients that suffer from dyslexia. Dyslexia is where someone has problems with the formation of words and grasping how to spelling etc. Unfortunately they will lag behind the peers around them with things such as understanding lessons in the classroom and their handwriting will suffer greatly.

These memory techniques were introduced to a group of children suffering from dyslexia. The focus capacity of the children’s brains increased dramatically, which in turn helped them with there learning capacities. The children began to understand what their teachers were presenting to them. Also, their spelling improved dramatically and over a period of time, the children were able to catch up to their peers. Memory enhancing software can help in facilitating permanent relief of memory problems, and as a bonus is minus any side effects.

Skullcap – Is an excellent nerve tonic and is very powerful. Skullcap has been used widely for many nervous conditions such as anxiety, insomnia and much more. It can be taken as a tea or in a extract. I would strongly recommend the extract if you are looking for something really strong, as a lot of the tea maybe be needed for certain situations.

Passionflower – The flowers of the passion vine have long been used to promote relaxation and a calming feeling. It can be taken as a tea or in a extract. It is not as strong as some of the other natural alternatives but it can be good if used in combination with some other herbs.

Damiana – Damiana is a wonderful herb normally used in teas, that promotes relaxation in the body . It can be taken as an extract also or as a simple wine infusion that you can make your self. I highly recommend this herb to be used on a daily basis if you need to relax and counter act the stress in your life.

Valerian – Is a powerful herb that helps promote a deep sleep, it can be extremely effective when taken before sleep. A good sleep means you will be less stressed and more relaxed the next day. This is herb is highly recommended if you are suffering from insomnia or just need to sleep a bit better.

A combination of all the above will most definitely help you relax a lot and lead a more productive life free from stress.

If you feel you need something really powerful and don’t enjoy tea or herbal extracts then why not try binaural beats, I have used them a lot when I feel stressed or just need to relax, they can help you forget about everything around you and just relax.

The Lost Language of Plants[/avhamazon]It had been a while since I had read a truly great book, when one day to my surprise I stumbled apon Stephen Harrod Burners masterpiece The Lost Language of Plants. The sheer amount of research and knowledge this book contains is amazing, for someone interested in the environment and plants it is a refreshing recap on a lot of topics and for someone knew to these topics it is a great introduction and motivator. Your mind will truly be opened to the fragility of your natural or not so natural surroundings after finishing this book which im sure you will.

Buhner highlights many disturbing facts about what is going on just outside your door; toxins in your water, pharmaceuticals present in ever growing numbers, genetic modification this book has it all, including a pleasant introduction to communicating with plants and the benefits this practice can bring to your life and others.

Buhner uses the Lost Language of Plants to share this amazing realization of how all beings can actually speak to each other in some form, and why this lost language is worth treasuring and sharing with others.

I particularly enjoyed the relevant quotations left throughout this book which has me compiling a list of new books to buy already, thank you Buhner my wallet will be sparse by the time im finished. It is one of those books you want to buy and put in a place where you can always find it and come back to read whenever you need to.

This book really is something you must read, so much effort and dedication has been put into this book and I honestly could not put it down once I started.
